The Michigan Agency for Energy (MAE), issued a press release dated Nov. 17 stating the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved ending the SSR charges for the White Pine Unit 1 generator. This should save UP residents roughly $28 million through the end of 2019 or more than $7 million a year. — For customers of the Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCo) and other electric utilities in the Marquette area.
This announcement has no direct financial benefit to Cloverland Electric Co-op and its 34,000 members in the EUP. Cloverland has not collected any SSR payments for this White Pine Unit 1 generator and will not benefit from its closing.
Cloverland members are still facing nearly $7 million in SSR payments for the 2014-15 operating budget for the Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette. That case is pending with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, D.C. and is not expected to be settled until late next spring at the earliest.
